Charlane Oliver is one of the most electrifying voices in American democracy a TEDx speaker, award-winning nonprofit founder, political strategist, and Tennessee State Senator who has spent two decades on the frontlines of racial justice, voting rights, and the fight for Black political power in the South.
In May 2026, Senator Oliver became a national symbol of resistance when she stood atop her Senate desk singing "Lift Every Voice and Sing" in protest of a racially gerrymandered congressional map designed to erase Black political representation in Tennessee. When the Speaker of the Senate cut off her microphone, snatched her sign, and disabled her voting button, the moment went viral nationwide and a movement was born. She has been profiled by The 19th, covered by national and international media, and recognized as one of the defining voices of the modern civil rights movement.
Called into activism after the murder of Trayvon Martin, Charlane co-founded The Equity Alliance in 2016 with $250 of her own money, building it into a $2.5 million powerhouse of Black political and economic organizing and earning recognition as The Tennessean's 2020 People of the Year, a distinction previously held by Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift, and Vice President Al Gore. She is also the founder of Upstream Strategies, LLC, a political consulting firm specializing in Southern battleground organizing, strategic advisement, candidate coaching, and leadership training and development.
A nationally recognized voting rights advocate and speaker, Charlane was named in 2020 by Reckon South among “8 Black women fighting for voting rights in the South” after the election of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, National Journal, Pew Charitable Trusts, Huffington Post, the Associated Press, Think Progress, on Mornings with Zerlina Maxwell on Sirius XM, NPR Weekend Edition, MSNBC, CNN, Roland Martin Unfiltered, internationally and throughout Tennessee. She has graced the coveted stage at the inaugural TEDxNashvilleWomen and has been a featured guest on various local television broadcasts, radio stations and national podcasts.
In 2022, Charlane was elected to the Tennessee State Senate, winning the toughest Democratic primary in the state in 100 days as the only woman in a five-person open race. As the lone progressive voice in the Tennessee Senate, she serves as Vice-Chairwoman of the Senate Democratic Caucus and Vice-Chair of the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators.
A survivor of sexual abuse who speaks publicly and powerfully about her experience, Charlane brings rare personal courage to every stage she steps onto. She holds a bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
